Pesaro Nuovo Cinema – Lino Miccichè Award
Festival programmers Pedro Armocida, Paola Cassano, Cecilia Ermini, Anthony Ettorre and Michela Greco look beyond the typical “festival film” in selecting the cinematically freest, newest titles of this competition of eight first and second features making their International or Italian premiere.
The jury comprises students from universities with film courses and leading film schools.
The Festival dedicates its main tribute to Algerian director Tariq Teguia (1966) with a complete retrospective: his early shorts (Kech’mouvement, 1992; Le Chien, 1996; Ferrailles d’attente, 1998; La Clôture, 2002), three features (Rome Rather Than You, 2006; Gabbla, 2008; Zanj Revolution, 2013), and the premiere of his latest work, Où en êtes-vous, Tariq Teguia? He will also present an Italian film particularly meaningful to him.

Retrospective + ebook
Films about cinema date back to the silent era, but they were sporadic. Until the 1960s, when television began encouraging these works, starting with Janine Bazin and André S. Labarthe’s renowned French series Cinéastes de notre temps. In the 1990s, with the advent of digital, DVDs and the web, critofilms (or film essays) grew exponentially. Today, they are a true genre, with diverse subgenres.
This first extensive retrospective of critofilms is accompanied by a round table and the first-ever ebook on the subject, with Italian and international contributors. Curated by Adriano Aprà.

Can cinema still tell stories for everyone, as theatre, musical melodramas and serialized fiction once did? What makes it a narrative art today? How has storytelling changed, and continues to change, as distribution platforms and TV series mushroom? Over two-dozen Italian academics and critics offer their answers to these key questions in contemporary cinema. Alongside interviews with directors and screenwriters and an original cine-futuristic short story by Antonella Lattanzi.
Six parings of new and old films in genres that include “occupational” comedies (Paolo Virzì’s Your Whole Life Ahead of You + Mario Monicelli’s The Organizer); historic-educational films (by Roberto Rossellini + Mario Martone); melodramas (Raffaello Matarazzo’s Chains + Castellitto/Mazzantini); and futuristic cinema (Diabolik and Satanik + Gabriele Mainetti’s They Call Me Jeeg.

SATELLITE – Visions for the future cinema
A new non-competitive section that examines the range of complex and imperfect non-commercial, micro-budget Italian audiovisual works. New cinema around the world needs new physical – not just virtual – spaces to be seen and discussed, warts and all. In this sidebar, works too often excluded from festivals because they do not “fit” traditional categories (competition, format, running time, style).

Queen Kong by Monica Stambrini
Special Event: Le ragazze del porno + Italian Porn round table
The world premiere of Queen Kong (2015, 18’) by Monica Stambrini, featuring Luca Lionello, Janina Rudenska and Valentina Nappi. The film by the director who made her debut with Gasoline (2001) is part of the project Le Ragazze del Porno, launched in 2012. The project will be the focus of a round table on Italian Porn organized in partnership with the magazine 8 e ½ (edited by Gianni Canova), which dedicated its latest issue to the topic.
Giuseppe Baresi – John Porter
On the heels of the 50th anniversary of Super8, the Festival presents two filmmakers who work in this glorious format: Giuseppe Baresi (Italy) and John Porter (Canada). The directors will introduce these unique one-off screenings, providing live commentary on their works.

After Hours Music
A week of midnight screenings at Palazzo Gradari, with live accompaniments to masterpieces of world cinema. Curated by Anthony Ettorre.
Musical guests include Spartiti (the project by Max Collini ex Offlaga Disco Pax e Jukka Reverberi), OvO, Mai Mai Mai, Camillas, composer-pianist Mario Mariani; and a contemporary musical and visual reinterpretation of Michelangelo Antonioni’s Blow-Up, on the 50th anniversary of its release, by Eugenio Giordani and Marco Salvarani with the collaboration of Roberto Vecchiarelli.
Female Russian Directors
Five films by five female directors offer a snapshot of the cultural ferment fueling the younger generations of a continually evolving world. Curated by Giulia Marcucci in collaboration with Russian film institutions.

Pescheria Café – Visual Arts Center Events
Starting at 10 am, during the festival one of Pesaro’s most prestigious contemporary art spaces will host round tables, filmmaker discussions and the presentation of the 2016 Cinema Book of the Year Award.
There will also be screenings in the former Chiesa del Suffragio, curated by Elena Volpato in partnership with the GAM Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art of Turin: auteur films and videos from the 1960s and 1970s from the GAM archives.
Festival opening theme and poster by Virgilio Villoresi
For his first-ever festival opening theme and poster, Virgilio Villoresi, one of today’s foremost animation filmmakers, unites primitive and experimental cinema in his characteristically iconic and playful style. Pesaro seems an almost mandatory choice for this “debut” – all of the experimental filmmakers Villoresi counts as his inspirations have come through the festival, in person, in screenings or both: Jonas Mekas, Kenneth Anger, Maya Deren, Stan Brakhage, Zibnew Rybzinski, Chris Marker, Straub and Huillet, Paolo Gioli and Alberto Grifi.

Pesaro in Milan
In September, in partnership with Formacinema and Agis Lombardia, the Festival will in present the winning films of the Premio Lino Miccichè Concorso Pesaro Nuovo Cinema and Cinema in Piazza Audience Award at Le Vie del Cinema 2016 (along with the Venice and Locarno film festivals).
