Elsa, a fisherman’s wife, lives in a city on the Caspian Sea. She tries to leave her husband, but gets cold feet, fearing an unknown future. When her husband dies, Elsa is forced to re-examine her ideas of life, happiness and freedom.
Ella Manzheeva (Elista, Kalmykia, 1981) studied violin and graduated from the St. Petersburg State University of Film and Television, specializing in sound direction. In 2007 she enrolled in a Masters in Screenwriting. Her short film A Steppe Inside Her (Ženš ina vnutri kak step’) won an award at the Sv- jataja Anna Festival and top honors at the Formula Mundi Festival in Germany. Her debut feature The Gulls was one of three finalists in the Works in Progress sidebar of the Karlovy Vary International Fes- tival.
