Romance & Cigarettes

Romance & Cigarettes

This original musical centers on Nick Murder, a working class New Yorker who cheats on his beloved wife Kitty with the seductive Tula. Kitty discovers her husband’s infidelity at the same moment that Tula forces him to choose between her and his wife.

The true, shocking novelty of Romance & Cigarettes lies in the dialogue, written by Turturro…brimming with the most unbridled and sensual swearing ever heard in American cinema.
Alberto Crespi, L’Unità, May 5, 2006

John Turturro (1957, Brooklyn) studied at the Yale School of Drama and began performing off-Broadway, winning an Obie Award for Danny and the Deep Blue Sea. Further success came in 1989 with Do the Right Thing, the first of a series of films he made with Spike Lee. Another fruitful collaboration has been with the Coen brothers, which won him the Best Actor Palme d’Or for Barton Fink. In 1992 he won the Camera d’Or for Best Director at Cannes for Mac, his debut, autobiographical feature.
