This documentary triptych – through the use of a well-known experimental device, the split screen – is both an exploration of the life and work of Manuel Piqueras Cotolí, a Spanish sculptor and architect who emigrated to Peru in 1919, and a reflection on the image through the image. Drawing on the discovery and reuse of a 16mm family archive, alongside contemporary footage and words appearing on the screens, the filmmaker revisits the layered narratives of a personal and collective memory torn between Peru and Spain. She seeks images where memory falls short, testimonies where images no longer exist, while addressing the violence of colonial appropriation with a critical, lucid approach.
Assia Piqueras (1991, France) works as an artist and filmmaker in a transversal way. A former student of the École Normale Supérieure and Le Fresnoy - Studio national des arts contemporains, she holds a Master of Arts in Documentary Cinema and Visual Anthropology from Paris Nanterre University. Her work has been presented both in France and abroad, at film festivals, curated film platforms, seminars, and contemporary art spaces. Her belief in the power of images also includes their disappearance as a form of expression.
