Some seeds preserved in Madrid’s Botanical Gardens have been sent back to an Afro-Peruvian village in southern Peru, from where they were collected originally during a colonial expedition around 1800. An imaginary journey, a counter-narrative to colonial despoilment. Since the colonial era, different polymorphous regimes of power have developed and fed into each other: colonialism, European modernity, anthropocentrism, and Western technoscience. The film explores the spectral capacity of the archive, offering a critical perspective to examine the continuity of contemporary neocolonial structures. “The importance of the seed resembles the ‘figure of the spectrum’ that Mark Fisher outlines in Ghosts of My Life, ‘which cannot be fully present: it is not a being in itself but indicates a relationship with what is no longer more or with what is not yet...’” (Mauricio Freyre)
Mauricio Freyre, born in Lima and based in Madrid, is a researcher, audiovisual artist, and filmmaker with a background in architecture. His project ‘Interspecies Architecture’ premiered at the 2019 Venice Architecture Biennale and its film version was presented at the 2022 Pesaro Film Festival. He has obtained the National Prize for Experimental Films awarded by the Ministry of Culture in Peru and the Matadero Production Grant in Madrid.
