A voice-over, a cat, a bed, a snail: these elements seem to find their epitome in a blanket-installation, a tempting, multicoloured woollen coil in which the filmmaker herself up staging her self-representation. The short film is also an ode to sleep and the horizontal position, wishing to be able to hide in the cat’s fur just as snails retreat in their proverbial shell. A quiet, but not motionless or somnolent film which uses mixed media as well, while expressing a compelling love for our pets and gratitude for the small, safe spaces they create for us.
Marthe Peters is a Dutch filmmaker based in Ghent, Belgium. She graduated from KASK, Ghent, in 2023. Her graduation film Kaalkapje premiered at the Berlinale. Starting from a place of intimacy, she depicts her everyday reality in an abstract and fragmentary manner. In her practice, intuitively gathered film footage comes together playfully to question stereotypical representations of the body. The banal as something significant and valuable, in search of comfort and care for one another.
