The film - commissioned by M+, the Hong Kong new museum of modern art - samples and stitches together waterside vistas from the Pearl River to Victoria Harbour across the Guangdong–Hong Kong–Macao Greater Bay Area, unfolding as a single, scroll-like continuum. Yet the further the camera moves towards the boundary of representation, the more abstract and unstable the imagery becomes, echoing the low growls and cracks within the cavernous body of the monumental architecture. “I am fascinated by this region. Over the past decade, it has experienced remarkable economic and tourist development. Water is central to this, and in my work I have tried to capture its lesser-known, unsung aspects. I relied on a Chinese app that identifies ‘internet-famous’ sites to pinpoint all the overlooked details within those places that we may have stopped noticing.”
Zhou Tao was born in 1976 in Changsha, Hunan Province. He studied at the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts and received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in oil painting and a Master of Fine Arts in mixed-media studies. He currently lives in Guangzhou. He made many short and feature films, inspired by his extensive travels, and has recently been focusing on projects with on a more local scale.
