Scenes from the quiet life of an elderly couple of artists. The shots seamlessly switch from black-and-white to colour. The screen ratio is variable, too. Despite the laidback, observational approach of the filmmaker, the subject is phenomenal, as he shares fragments of footage gathered over 25 years putting together a deeply personal portrait of photographer Robert Frank and artist June Leaf, his wife. “In films shot on 16mm and Super 8 over many years, now edited digitally, I reflect on my many visits to the homes of Robert and June in a relentlessly changing NYC and a seemingly timeless Cape Breton.” (Jem Cohen)
Jem Cohen is a filmmaker and photographer based in New York. His work is in the permanent collections of New York’s Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, The Jewish Museum, and D.C.’s National Gallery of Art. We Have an Anchor, a multi-media portrait of Cape Breton with live music, was shown at BAM’s Next Wave and London’s Barbican. Cohen has worked extensively with musicians including Fugazi, Patti Smith, R.E.M., Godspeed, and Terry Riley.
