Shot on black-and-white 16mm film, Local Sensations is a loose, playful dialogue with Chatri Prakitnonthakan’s essay How to Design a Modern Monument That Won’t Become a Shrine. Though the film circles around ideas of monuments, monumentality, and sanctification in Thai society, no statues or literal monuments ever appear. Fragmentary scenes set in urban or natural settings, obliquely connected through the musician figure, are woven into an evolving, gently destabilizing field of sensation. Together, they form an invitation to reconsider what “locality” and “monumentality” might mean, and how close they are to us. "I am always looking for a kind of friction, a clash between different logics. This prevents one thing from becoming too abstract or detached from another and stops everyday life – or the profilmic – from being seen as neutral. Based in Bangkok, Tulapop Saenjaroen is a Thai experimental filmmaker and artist whose practice spans performance, sound, and moving image. His recent works interrogate the relationship between image production and the production of subjectivity, as well as the paradoxes of control and freedom in late capitalism. His works have been presented internationally at film festivals, screenings, and exhibitions.
