Two narrator-investigators, the ‘master,’ Fortunato Cerlino, and the ‘pupil,’ Riccardo Bombagi, guide viewers on a quest for an imaginary “lost chapter” of the novel, mentioned by interviewees who agreed to play the game, including Giancarlo De Cataldo, Dante Ferretti, Francesca Lo Schiavo, Milo Manara, Gabriella Pescucci and, of course, Jean-Jacques Annaud. The novelist, Umberto Eco, also appears in rare archive footage.

Forty years on, film director Jean-Jacques Annaud reflects on his long friendship with Umberto Eco and the making of the film The Name of the Rose.
David Emmer divides his work between film, television and writing, including theatre. He has directed some of his best-loved works for Rai Cultura for years, including The Creation of Frankenstein and William Blake - La visione e l’infinito. In 2025, his Ma che ci faccio io qui? was presented at the Pesaro Film Festival.
Leopoldo Santovincenzo, the creator of the TV show Wonderland, has been in charge of programming at Rai 4 since 2008. He has written and directed numerous television productions, including Felliniana, Heimat: La macchina del tempo di Edgar Reitz, Corto Maltese: Gli anni dell’avventura, and has authored several books.
