UM ANIMAL AMARELO | A YELLOW ANIMAL

Brazil/Portugal 2020 , 116’

“Brazil, this huge Latin American land, still nurtures the traumas left by a legacy of slavery. […] In the darkest hours of the Brazilian dictatorship of the 1970’s, cinema delivered a cult of tropicalism, the film Macunaima (1970) by Joaquim Pedro de Andrade. A Yellow Animal, directed by Felipe Bragança half a century later, follows up on the issues raised by Macunaima about the Brazilian identity marked by the curse of political violence. In tune with the cinematic challenges posed by Kleber Mendonça Filho and Karim Aïnouz in their latest films, which show a deep knowledge of film genres along with a profound need to reawaken the political conscience of the viewer-citizen – namely the Brazilian – Felipe Bragança captures contemporary Brazil and its own deep questioning. To do so, he created a waltz that boasts the fantastic strangeness of magic realism unravelling a story that connects Brazil, the Portuguese-speaking Africa of Mozambique, and Portugal.” Cédric Lépine, Mediapart, February 6th, 2020
