“In John Ford’s Stagecoach, the entire plot is based on a possible Indian attack during the journey of a group of American settlers from one town to another. All the layers of American society in the making are represented in this fragile little vehicle, the stagecoach. The Indian attack sequence is archetypal, deeply rooted in the collective imagination of the Far West period. It’s all fake, but it all conveys the violence endured by real bodies. In my film - the result of capturing a projection of the 8mm reel on a dismantled LCD screen - violence is also conveyed through the use of stroboscopic light and experimentation with a flashlight, itself propelled through space by repetition and superimposition. For me, the western genre was the first domestic genre, which I remembered as representative of adult cinephilia. I imagine a diffuse image in the meanders of memory, a collective memory marked by these great American frescoes that we need to interrogate today.”
Noé Grenier is a video artist born in 1987 who graduated from ESBA-MOCO (Montpellier) and Fresnoy Studio National des Arts Contemporains (Tourcoing). Early on, he experimented with video moving images by way of a series of works, installations, photographs, and found footage. Thus, he conducts a reflection on the transformation of the image, and therefore the gaze, in the temporality of viewing.
