"...A film in the film": Classical music at the movies

The Pesaro “Square” – Piazza del Popolo – is glad to welcome this year too, on the World Music Day, a concert played by the prestigious Orchestra of the Conservatorio Rossini. Entitled “A film in the film. Classical music at the movies” and conducted by Maestro Luca Ferrara, the concert includes the execution of musical pieces by Mozart, Beethoven, and Rossini that we all have recognized and listened to at the movies.
The programme is as follows:
W. A. Mozart, The Marriage of Figaro, Overture. This piece is featured in several films, the most well-known possibly being John Landis’ Trading Places (1983), but mention should be made of Last Action Hero (1993) and Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory (1971) as well.
L. van Beethoven, Symphony No. 7. The first movement is found in the first episode of Carl Sagan’s TV series Cosmos: A Personal Voyage. The second movement is featured in at least twenty films, including The King’s Speech starring Colin Firth (2010), Bryan Singer’s X-Men: Apocalypse (2016), the series Mr. Robot (2015), Alex Proyas’ Knowing (2009), Richard Schenkman’s The Man from Earth (2007), Tarsem Singh’s The Fall (2006), Stephen Herek’s Mr. Holland’s Opus (1995), Bernard Rose’s Immortal Beloved (1994), Edgar G. Ulmer’s The Black Cat (1934), Jean-Luc Godard’s Goodbye to Language (2014), and Małgorzata Szumowska’s Elles (2011). Wes Anderson’s The Darjeeling Limited (2007) features the fourth movement.
G. Rossini, The Barber of Seville, Overture. This piece can be found notably in the Bugs Bunny cartoon short Rabbit of Seville (Looney Tunes, 1950) and in Mario Monicelli’s movie Rossini! Rossini! (1991).
